The TVB Singers Celebrate The Anniversary <翡翠歌星賀台慶> show took place yesterday evening at TVB City and marked the first of the three gala performance events in the TVB 41st anniversary month.

The theme for the event was "Since 1967..." and performers and guests from across the music industry arrived dressed in various character costumes, ranging from film characters such as Leo Ku (古巨基)'s Harry Potter costume and Eric Suen (孫耀威)'s Captain Jack Sparrow to international pop stars including Jade Kwan (關心妍) as Avril Lavigne and Wong Cho Lam (王祖藍) as Boy George. Other costumes of note included Vincy Chan (泳兒) as Catwoman and Kary Ng (吳雨霏)'s hilarious look as the landlady from Kung Fu Hustle <功夫>. Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) appeared as Marilyn Munroe, which was from the wrong period in time, but still a worthy effort.

Veteran stars Alan Tam (譚詠麟), Nat Chan (陳百祥) and Kenny Bee (鍾鎮濤) were on hand to build up some atmosphere. However, music industry 'big sisters' Miriam Yeung (楊千嬅) and Joey Yung (容祖兒) and Charlene Choi (蔡卓妍) were rather conservative with their outfits.

Carol Cheng (鄭裕玲)'s usual slushy banter with David Lui (呂方) and the subsequent jokes and fun were noticeably absent from this year's show following the couple's recent break-up. As a result, she became the centre of attention as the press continued to quiz her about the break-up. Carol seemed to have lost some weight and was even bonier than usual in her strappy dress for her MC role on the show. Asked if this was due to being unhappy of late, she insisted that she has been losing weight intentionally so that she would look good in her outfit and has lost about 6 lbs.

Carol performed with Grasshopper (草蜢) for their dance number in the show and explained that she has always loved dancing, so she had a good time. When reporters asked how she has been, she said she will be taking a short break because she has a lot of work coming up, such as the Miss International pageant and the remaining anniversary shows. Asked if she was immersing herself in work to drown her sadness, she simply thanked everyone for their concern before walking away.

The TVB anniversary celebrations will continue with the TVB Anniversary Awards Presentation Ceremony <萬千星輝頒獎典禮> on 15 November and the TVB Anniversary Extravaganza <萬千星輝賀台慶> on 19 November.
