My question is that are we really living, or is it just a dream that only ends when you we die.

Oh... this sounds like the matrix movie plot.
Personally, I think its real that we are living.

Oh ye Gods, this metaphysics again :P
So far, philosophers concurred that one cannot tell at all (Phil 101?), since the knowledge of the others (beings other than oneself), the external world, the internal world, cannot be rectified and imperically proven to exist.
I would love to think that we exist and course through life though, life is too fake to be a dream.

Philosophy is a load of BS that requires you to actually subscribe to the theory and throw away all logical and scientific inhibitions.
Obviously, yes. We are living, because this is how we describe life.
If this is a dream, then this dream is living.

Nah. When you die, you'll have lost your life. There is nothing to know, as you cannot know.

Haha well be4 u even ask that i guess u should ask urself what life is to u. Which would u perfer to believe it is and why? Personally i perfer to think of life as just life. What if we were in a living dream? Same thing alive in a dream. U can't know and even if u did why would u want to? Ur life still would just be ur life. Ignorance is bliss many times.
My question is that are we really living, or is it just a dream that only ends when you we die.
so what you are saying is.. when he die.. we actually wake up..?? what do we do when we wake up??
so when we have dreams.. we're actually in our own dream, dreaming...??

^ Ecko brings up a good point. if life is dream ... and death is the wakening from this dream ...
WHAT ARE WE WAKING UP TO??

On the other hand, if living is a dream, dying is the end of the dream. It does not refute the possibility that there is another dream lined up after the end of the first dream. So it would be like incarnation.

I thought when someone die, then they will recycle to the next life to a different being... Thats what I heard on the Buddhist theory. -unsure

To me, only nothingness awaits after death. I don't subscribe to the idea of going to heaven or any form of afterworld.
Back to the question posed by the topic starter, yes I believe that we are really living. I define living as having conscience, so yes, I am alive.

So does it really matter? Cause theres no real proof of existence. If we were really just living a dream then do we start to live after death? or do we re-live another dream?
On the other hand, if living is a dream, dying is the end of the dream. It does not refute the possibility that there is another dream lined up after the end of the first dream. So it would be like incarnation.
yes but once you wake up.. would you dare to dream again!? O_o;
or are well all hooked up to dream machines..? -shrug

that question, no one can answer. I wish we are dreaming, that mena we don't have to die, or are we dead lol. but if we were dreaming, then why are we dreaming for this long. these question can never be answer, but if i were u, i wouldn't worry about it. Live ur life, and if we are dreaming, that just mean we have a new life waiting for us to redo again.

hahaha did you take this from the Matrix
you could quote Descartes on this: I think therefore I am
which means... that since you have thoughts, you are living... lol

we are living base on what we define life is. We could all be dreaming but thinking we are living. So in the end, no one knows.

Obviously, you're dead... Whatever I'm saying right now is just an illusion and your imiagination...
(notice the sarcasm)
I don't see how you can interpret human life as fake. It is quite obvious that we are really living and not dreaming. And if we are only dreams, then whose dream are we in?
"a dream that ends when you die" does not make complete logical sense with your question. Assuming that human life is a dream, then either humans die and whoever is dreaming us wakes up. Or humans actually die and the dreams that we are dreaming ends. With your question, it is clear that you are intending option 1 to be real since you think that humans are in a dream and not actually the ones dreaming. Therefore, since you are intending option 1, then that creature is the one who controls whether humans live or not. The creature can always dream and make humans alive again. That would not make sense since I believe that humans do actually die. So the conclusion is that humans are real and humans are not living in a dream.

"A dream that ends when you die" is more like a state... Like in the Matrix, one is put into induced coma (whatever, egg?) and have the consciousness hooked up to a central network which is in fact a
bunch of electric signals... When one dies, the signaling from the brain ceases and the body is withdrawn from the network, thus "dying" because the so-called real world outside the world is nothing one has experienced and will not get to experience because one will obviously drown or just simply DIE when the signal ends.
As to living again, I don't think it is exactly "living again" if one cannot retain memories and thoughts... It would be more appropriately called "reincarnation"...
Well, there are real people in the matrix. lol
Now we are moving ahead of ourselves to define "real". If you would care to define "real"? Is what you touch and see and smell real? All of them are based on such filmsy reality of brain signals... How REAL is that?
LOL at m_g's LOL at Matrix :P I still remember having like a million long night discussions with friends about the underlying concept of Matrix and parallel universe and all... It's all so geeky beyond all belief...

we are wherever we choose to be. If we believe that we are in hell then we are in hell. If we believe this is heaven, then so be it. I tend to sometimes think that we're just all here in purgatory, serving our sentences for our past crimes in previous life....then there's some people that screw up.

this this only apply to heaven or hell, how about the moon?

^ In fact it applies to the Matrix too... But yeah, doesn't work on the moon @_@b
thats odd.. i do believe i have replied to this thread.. but i guess i didnt...
ive learned in psychology course that some theorists do believe that, just like the matrix mentioned above, we are simply living a dream...
i think thats all rubbish...
and plus... this topic is actually ambiguous.... living as it consciously living? or physically living?

to think that there maybe robots sucking energy out of our real bodies while we sleep and in this dream world. im surprised the matrix never send an agent to kill the guys who came up with the matrix, blowing their cover an all..... watching the matrix in a movie while being in the matrix lol.
hiake
05-23-2007, 12:30 AM
^ Well, the best possible cover-up ever invented is to make it a fantastical household story...
Would you believe the existence of witches and wizards a la Harry Potter? Would you believe it if someone tell you that he/she knows that kid with a scar shaped like lightning on their forehead??? Such claim would be dismissed as "oh he/she's just too into the book"
So I guess if Matrix is REALLY true, those producers are getting VIP treatment for their blockbuster cover-up...

Its really hard to tell. From watching the matrix, i have really been confused about all this. But are we real and if this is a dream then i guess both can be feasible.
