Well... I was wondering there is all kind of fairy in lots of stories such as tree, tooth, snow, sun, spring...
So do they actually exist in a particular century, is it just a myth or imagination for some people?
What do u think? -unsure

I think it's just personification of so-called spirits of the world. Because pre-medival (I forgot the exact period, but it's quite ancient) time, people think that the world is ruled by Gods and spirits, so I guess fairies (or faeries) are a spin-off from that.

No offence, if you say fairies exist... Then you might as well say Dragon exist and Santa exist... and whatever you want to think exist...

fairies, ghosts, spirits... souls (as opposed to physical body of men)... do they exist ??
Folklores and mythology say they do exist. Ancient buddhist texts describes many other-worldly beings... e.g. Tien Lung Ba Bu ( 8 heavenly dragons... also the name of Jin Yung's famous wuxia novel).
It is also impotant to note that the singular most important teaching of mahayana buddhism is that nothing is real... everything that you know of with your sensory perceptions is nothing but like a dream... they are there as real as you can perceive, but there is no real substance to all phenomena as you know it.
More later... if there is interest in this topic.

As a kid i used to believe in them as most kids do but we grow up realising they aren't real. I think its a myth but its a nice thought of there being real fairies in this world.

I thought the 8 heavenly dragons (not the Jin Yung novel) is a scripture about 8 gods? I read and knew about Ashura and Yasha and Sumo, not sure if I spelt them right though.
And the non-reality aspect of being? The only thing I can say is that if I cannot believe in what I can or cannot see, there's no basis of human life. How do you know you are living (if fact you don't). And then it all goes down the metaphysics philosophy talk from this point onwards =_=b
And YES, interested.
For those who are interested in the "8 heavenly dragons" (myth no the novel) and can read Chinese, here is a good site for info: Clicky (http://www.greatchinese.com/buddha/buddha026.htm).

^ Well, fairies are mythical creatures (supposed they DO exist and the "fairy tales" are indeed about their collective existence) aren't they? So it's only natural that the thread also steer towards the fantastical. :P

04-18-2007, 04:07 PM
Well where did the whole fairy thing start? What is the root of the word "fairy"?? I dont know if they are real or not cos i leave my teeth under my pillow but i dont get anything!! But it still doesnt mean they dont exist.
I think this question is just like asking do you think there are ghosts or do you think theres life outside earth
hiake
04-18-2007, 04:13 PM
I guess the fairy thing starts, not unlike religions (pagan or otherwise), to explain something unexplainable. The tree grows and dies because a tree fairy (or lymph) lives and dies, the crops grows because of the love of the harvest goddess etc etc.
But whether at one point in time there's actually some kind of fairy exists is worth debating.
I still love mythical talk :D

^ haha.. I did that teeth thing b4.. hmm.. where did it go? can't remember now
But I do believe in the supernatural. I saw one b4.. and pretty certain it wasn't an illusion. Plus a really scary nightmare to come with it..

04-18-2007, 04:18 PM
^ My skepticism come from the fact that I never experienced it =_=b Not that I wanted to have ghost-encountering experience per se...
But I get plenty of deja-vu though, but that was said to be a play of the mind... so not a supernatural experience.

i think fairies are entities/ animals that are yet to be discovered
people in the past couldn't explain it and so they named as a "fairy"

Do fairies exist? The Artist Formerly Known as Prince?
LOL! I was gonna add to this but let me refrain from getting off-topic... -rolleyes
Do fairies exist? Not with certain religions. Usually the Pagan religions do believe in fairies, Also Celtic regions believe in them as well. They're mostly an ideal used in children's stories.
But if you're talking about actual physical entities then no....unless we're referring to Prince. -shock

and my teacher suddenly burst out,
"THOSE 2 FAIRIES DOWN THE BACK, WILL YOU STOP HAVING YOUR PRIVATE LITTLE TEA PARTY AND PAY ATTENTION??"

well, it depends. if you think they exist then they do. just like santa clause. no one can argue with you something that cant be proved. unless you claim is contradicting.

Hmm... I can't say they exist but I can't totally agree they don't. There's no truth fact that proves they exist but there isn't any fact that says they don't either. Besides, if people become too realistic, they take all the magic out of life. ;)
