Hong Kong's most prolific and unabashedly commercial director Wong Jing, creator of such gambling classics as God of Gamblers and The Conman, closed out 2006 with Wise Guys Never Die, his latest entry into the genre he knows best. This time, Wong appears both in front of and behind the camera, taking on the film's leading role opposite the busy Nick Cheung (Exiled). Cheung himself is no stranger to gambling films as he starred in the Wong Jing-produced The Conman 2002 a few years ago. Like Wong's previous gambling flicks, Wise Guys Never Die pulls out the card tricks, but plays for much more than laughs. Also featuring Johnnie To-regular Eddie Cheung, actress Alice Chan, and newcomer singer Jolie Chan, the film presents a surprisingly dark and tense psychological drama with more than a few twists in store.
Mild-mannered white-collar convict Nick (Nick Cheung) is having a very tough time in prison until he meets affable veteran conman Teddy (Wong Jing), who takes Nick under his wings. Once out of prison, the two become partners in crime, with Teddy patiently teaching Nick the ropes of the trade. As they lay out the plans for conning gambling den boss Dragon (Eddie Cheung), Nick begins to sense that something is amiss, as Teddy seems to be hiding something from him. Meanwhile, Nick also has designs of his own for Teddy's sultry girlfriend (Alice Chan). The stakes are raised with everyone playing a two-faced game, but who will leave the table the winner?
