Released under the "Focus: First Cut" banner, My Mother is a Belly Dancer takes a starkly human look at Hong Kong urban culture and a very common, yet very overlooked segment of society. Set in one of Hong Kong's ubiquitous cavernous public housing estates, the film revolves around the plight of the "see lai", grocery-shopping, price-haggling, aging, nagging housewives. In a world of loud voices, cramped spaces, tight finances, and the same old drab, the common housewife toils for her family on a daily basis, but comes home perennially underappreciated. Directed by Lee Kung Lok, My Mother is a Belly Dancer gives voice to these sentiments with a bittersweet story of hope, humor, and some belly dancing.

Mrs. Chan (Amy Chum) is getting a divorce from her cheating husband. Timid Mrs. Lee (Suet Lei) has an overbearing husband (former TVB actor Ken Tong) and a disobedient son who eat away at her self-esteem. Mrs. Wong (Crystal Tin, Golden Chicken) just lost her job, and does not know how to face her caring but unemployed husband (Gordon Lam, Election). Young single mother Cherry (Monie Tung) is caught between her baby and her new boyfriend. These four women from the same housing estate find themselves in a community belly dancing class that brings new color and confidence into their lives. But conservative husbands and neighbors are determined to put an end to their hobby.

i found this film rather dark and depressing! It was filled with tears of shame, guilt hurt, fear, jealousy and pain. It does however hightlights some of the social and domestic issues that are less frequently shown in hk films. The ending didnt really pack much of a punch.

Stick with the hk conventions of kung-fu busting bikini girls spraying mounds of bullets at triads with meat cleaver fights in the back market :)

this is a really really good movie. i was hesitant about watching it at first because of the ridiculous title but the storyline is fabulous and the cast is superb. a must watch!!!
