im doing a kung fu called "wing chun" or "wing tsun" someting like tat
its quite popular in HK, it was bruce lee's first style...and then he went on to make his own. ive done it for 2yrs now.. but i only go once a week.. not enough.
its not really stylish, but has some cool techniques such as sticking hands, ONE INCH PUNCH

i used to go karate before finding out i could beat up most of the students with my street fighting skills (i used to fight alot). i left and started training alone in my garden and got very very good, i was able to test it out at school in consentual fights each day. ill never forget when we had judo lessons at school and i grabbed a friend and ripped the arm of his judo uniform off :) that proved that my hand exersises were really working.

^ obviously you havent learned anything from martial arts.

the more you learn martial arts, the more you learn self-control. the main reason for martial art isnt to go kick other people's asses. it is learning how NOT to get into a fight. you did the exact opposite.

every non-martial artists will think that martial arts are used to kick ass and shit. but no. IT IS NOT. it's the exact opposite.

yes martial arts teaches kicks and punches, but the main lesson, is discipline, and NOT get into fights.

obviously, you aren't a martial artist. you're merely a beginner who still has lessons to learn. <-- and that was the nice way of putting it.

edit: oh and just so you know, i teach tkd. and when some dude comes into my gym as a beginner and starts beating up kids, i put on my sparring equipments, and they will learn it the hard way. they never show up again.

nah im not claiming to be a martial artist of any kind, if i did then please point it out, without going into it to much, i was unfortunate enough to grow up in one of the worst areas in Birmingham, England, having to learn to defend myself was a requirment, resulting in my fair share of fights. i was simply talking about my distant past.

when i said i could beat up most of the students with my street fighting skills, maybe i should have said "i could have", ofcourse i never hurt or try to hurt anyone. but luckily i had many friends who enjoyed martial arts like me so we were always sparing.

sorry dann, i forgot that whatever i write can be blown out of proportion so i hope this has cleared it up.

edit: oh and just so you know, i teach tkd. and when some dude comes into my gym as a beginner and starts beating up kids, i put on my sparring equipments, and they will learn it the hard way. they never show up again.

Good for you :)

wow interesting you must be slapping a lot of people around with that lol :D

hmm actually I like shaolin style gong fu.. most chinese styles derived from shaolin's influence, there's the southern style fists and northern kicks. Choy lee fut is a good example - long fists and effective against multiple opponents.
Wing chun is quite good as well but in short fists, it's fast and does not require the practitioners to be a of a muscular physique.

I understand martialarts is something that we can learn to keep fit and healthy in mind body and spirit, we can also learn to defend ourselves as well as improving in our character. I think people get into fights to prove something and its not because they know martial arts.

anyway ..

who here does martial arts? I guess I do :)
what type?Japanese swordsmanship
how long have u done it for? approx 4 years
what level are you at?Black belt Shodan

damn, i really want to take up chen style taichi, but its a bit hard to find a good legit instructor in Sydney :/

anyways the martial art i do is WTF (lmao "World tkd Federation", not "what the fuck" :P) Tae Kwon Do

i've been doing it for around 5 years and am currently at the level of blue belt.

and i love it, but at the same time, i want to do other martial arts, just tkd doesn't seem enough anymore. (plus half the dojo don't have discipline at all, makes it hard to actually train properly -.-;; )

@dann- whats trianing under ITF regulations like?

aha glad to hear everyone here is aware of the core philosophy of martial arts :P

Martial Arts is training to fight, but at the same time training not to fight

(ultimate paradox XD)

@dann- whats trianing under ITF regulations like?

well, it depends on the instructor. it shouldnt be overly different, like karate vs wrestling or something

but theres a political issue behind wtf and itf... anyways itf focuses more on the fundamentals of the art. like perfecting the basics in order to master the more difficult techniques.

but knowing some wtf artists, they said it was more sparring than techniques. you do a lot more sparring than itf, which in turn focuses on the science behind every movement.

so like.. moving what parts of the body to generate the greatest force in a punch. so when you learned the basics, you can apply them to sparring with more efficiency..

Martial Arts is training to fight, but at the same time training not to fight

(ultimate paradox XD)

yeah tis a paradox although i interpret training to fight to be fighting yourself and your inner self and imerge better

Aikido 5+ Years for me less agressive than other martial arts but when done properly very effective To me its not about the rank but is what u have learned and I agree from a previous post the more you learn the more self control u will exhibit

we have a saying 'Saya no uchi de katsu' victory is when the sword is in the scabbard, being able to win without having to result in drawing the blade.

Takes discipline to do that. Its our inner selves we try to conquer and its our limitations that we are testing

lol i like the name WTF

the more u study martial arts, the more you will become on how dangerous fights can me.
anything could happen. some guy could pop up from behind, and your gone!

ive never used my kungfu, nor have i been in a real fight

maybe disappointing, but its also a relief.

Currently taking up wtf style tkd again. took it before 3-4 yrs ago for 8-9 mths but couldn't continue when I moved somewhere far with no tkd schools. Recently found a tkd school in my area and now loving every second of it. So far have been training for 4 mths currently orange belt. Trying to come up with some sparring strategies for when I go compete in tournaments. We also cross train in little of everything including boxing, muay thai, hapkido, grappling. I plan on taking up muay thai, ju-jitsu/judo, wing chun, akido after I get my third dan.

I've done a little martial arts

Praying mantis

It was fun, but i still sucked, only done it for around a year

It was quite a few years ago, i quit coz i had more important commitments that clashed on the same day.

I've been thinking of going back to practice some day, but i never managed to get around to it.

I did TKD for about 2 years just to learn some basics. Then I quit because I didn't think I'd really needed to use it anyway. When I entered High School (where mostkids try to make a name for themselves), I realized that I'd actually need to defend myself. So I joined an MMA class with my friend.

I do muay thai and judo, good combination i reckon for close range combat, where i got the devastating power from muay thai and an arsenal of grapple and throws from judo.
Been doing them for about two years, but never really bothered with grading.
Love them both, apart from the long warm ups that we do, but on the plus side they are a good through exercise

Also did a beat of Eskrima which was really fun (Stick fighting which incorporates "sticky hands" from wing chun) Shame i cant carry it on as the instructor has left
