Merriman's not healthy enough. That's what happen when a person takes roid. I'm willing to bet he won't make it to mid-season (8 games). The Steelers have to be the favorite in the AFC when Merriman goes down (Colts looked horrible yesterday).

haha... u could reverse it and say should willie parker go down, Pittsburgh's season's probably over... Roethlisberger's been lucky he doesn't have to throw many passes every season...

Unless I'm missing the news where Willie Parker is playing with a bum knee, then I don't see why you are making that comparison...

u don't need start a game with a bum knee to leave a game with a torn acl...

the comparison is not so much about the injury, rather how much that player will be missed... losing Merriman means about 8-10 sacks a season... but that's nothing compared to 1,600yards ground game...

my point was, that Pittsburgh has more riding on their star players than SD is...

"u don't need start a game with a bum knee to leave a game with a torn acl..." I have no idea what you are trying to say with that sentence...
Anyway, it's "light out" for Merriman. He can't even last 2 games. As long as the Steelers have the luck Patriots had for the past 6 seasons in regards to health, they will easily win the AFC.

The Steelers have a good OL, and even if you lose Willie Parker, they are going to get a 1000+ yard rusher in someone (Moore, Mendenhall). And losing a pass-rushing beast like Merriman does hurt. 39 sacks in three seasons is not nothing. Good pass-rushing can create turnovers and make the secondary's job that much easier. Don't underestimate them, every team needs a Reggie White, a Lawrence Taylor, a Michael Strahan, a Bruce Smith, a Gino Marchetti, etc to become a great football team that can contend for the Super Bowl.

The Steelers are definitely the team to beat in the AFC.

injuries do not necessarily have to be a process of increasing magnitude... just because u start a game with a sore arm doesn't mean ur gonna leave it with a broken shoulder... likewise, just because u are in perfect health when u start a game, doesn't mean u won't leave it with a broken collarbone...

and the Steelers won't easily win the AFC, on paper their schedule is stacked... Cleveland and Baltimore are potential defensive upsets, and Cincy has the offensive personel to blow any team out... whether they do it or not is a different story... then there's still Philly, NYG, Jags, INDY... the only game they dont' particularly have to worry about is the Redskins and maybe Vince Young...

and if u think SD will miss Merriman too much, don't fret... i never said losing his sack numbers wouldn't be problematic... just not enuff to change the outcome... SD has a young defense with enough quick outside linebackers to put pressure on any o-line... minus the pats

team to beat in AFC... still hard to call... SD has the best chance imo... but u can't count out Indy or NE yet... Indy particularly since their team really hasn't changed since last season... just got older... and they probably just had a bad game to be honest... Pittsburgh is up there, but their schedule is again probably the toughest on paper...

It's not getting worse because it's at the worst shape possible for Merriman. He opted for surgery because he can't be effective anymore. So by implying Parker will miss the season as likely as Merriman will is simply wrong.

Cleveland, as shown, is garbage so far. Baltimore is a threat, but only if they can put up points on the board. Cincy is a mess (and lol they resign the punk, Chris Henry). Indy just got thrashed by the Bears' running game (a rookie, Forte). Jags' OL is garbage and can't keep Garrard upright. Giants lost two of their best pass-rushers (Strahan to retirement, Umenyiora to injury) before the season began.

And don't fret? Pass-rushing can help hide a suspect secondary (i.e. 07-08 Giants) or create enough turnovers to be a good team (creating a net positive takeaway). It can means winning the Super Bowl or losing in the first round, which the Chargers done oh-so-many-times. It's going to change the outcome, at least in the playoff. If nothing goes wrong health-wise, the Steelers will win the AFC easily.

yes, cuz we all know injuries never happen on the field and therefore Parker's chance of getting injured is so very much less so than everyone else, Merriman included

ur basing everything so far off of one game... so a young Cleveland team can't possibly have opening game jitters against the NFC's best team, and regardless how messy Cincy is that team can catch any team off guard for 500 yards and 5 touchdowns through the air, and of course a team as stacked as Indy will instantly go from a 12-4 season to being toothless, Jags arent' exactly the greatest offensive team i agree but, they're a defensive beast, o and the Giants must be crying now w/o their 2 star pass rushers, being the 5th best defensive team in the league based on ypg allowed, where are the Steelers and their superior pass rush? right....

I never took anything away from pass rushing, i know the game... even w/o Merriman, SD still has a potent set of linebackers... they're young and quick and they'll scare the crap out of u...
